Carolina Abarca
Carolina Abarca is a senior at Media Academy. In her spare time, Abarca enjoys reading, drawing, writing, hanging out with friends, traveling and watching movies. After high school, Abarca plans to go to Merritt College for two years and then transfer to the Art Institute or the Academy of Arts University in San Francisco. Abarca’s career aspirations range from being a creative writer, a chef, a zoologist or anything involving art.
Fernanda Lopez, Assistant Features Editor
Fernanda Lopez is a senior at Media Academy and a member of the Green & Gold newspaper. This is her first year on the staff. Lopez likes to cook & spend time with her friends during her free time. She plans to go to college and work in a profession she likes. At the end of the year, Lopez hopes to become a better writer and work really hard to make the Green & Gold be a newspaper teenagers love to read.
Tiffany Sanders
Tiffany Sanders is a junior at Media Academy. For fun, Sanders likes to go out and hang out with her friends. Sanders also likes to watch movies. A fun fact about Sanders is that she was born on Mother’s Day. Sanders will graduate in 2013 and hopes to attend college in Los Angeles. But before going to college, she will work then obtain her degree.
Janae Rushing
Janae Rushing is a senior at Media Academy. She is an Honor Roll student. This is her first year being a Fremont student and a Green & Gold staff writer. In her spare time she likes listening to music, social networking and spending time with loved ones. She also enjoys arts and crafts. After high school, Rushing is interested in attending San Francisco State or San Jose State University. Rushing’s desire is to study Child Development or Criminology. She is excited about participating in Ms. Shafer’s Journalism class. “I hope that I can better my writing skills with the support of my peers and teacher,” said Rushing.
Gloria “Jack” Mejia-Cuellar, Multimedia Editor
Gloria “Jack” Mejia-Cuellar a senior at Media Academy. Mejia loves to listen to music and enjoys volunteering. After school she is part of the Fremont Debate Team and 826 Valencia as well as theGreenNews.net. “UC Berkeley is my number one school but I would also like to attend Stanford or Columbia,” said Mejia about her future college plans. Her major of choice is Political Science, specifically public policy.
Adrian Nelson
Adrian Nelson is a junior at Media Academy and is also a part of the Green and Gold newspaper. In his free time, Nelson likes to write and record music. After school, Nelson is a part of the Black Student Union and Leadership Club. Sacramento State University and UC Berkley both interest Nelson as a career options. As a career, Nelson plans to work in music, either as a music producer or as a recording artist. When asked what he plans to get out of this class, Nelson said. “Learning another skill is like having a back-up plan.”
Alex Toris
Alex Toris is a junior at Media Academy. He is a staff writer for the the Media Green & Gold newspaper. Toris also said that he likes to sketch, and is a member of Urban Arts. After high school he said he would like to go to University of San Francisco or University of California Davis. Toris wants to be an artist and get a degree in psychology.
Juan Aguilar
Juan Jose Aguilar is a junior at Media Academy. In his part time, he enjoys playing soccer and playing video games. Aguilar plans to attend college but he’s undecided on the college he wants to attend. Aguilar wants to be a good soccer manager and work a job he likes where he feels comfortable. Juan also wants to become a better writer and achieve an A or B in newspaper class.
Shantel Berry
Shantel Berry is a junior at Media Academy. She is a member of the Green & Gold newspaper. In her spare time, she likes to do hair, hang with friends, go shopping, and just be out of the house. Berry plans on attending University of Nevada, Las Vegas. She wants to pursue a career in communications. In her newspaper class, she hopes to improve her writing skills and design pages.
Araceli Ramos, Health Editor
Araceli Ramos is a Media Academy junior. She is a member of the Green & Gold newspaper. Ramos has been a member of the poly club since sophomore year. In her spare time, she loves to go shopping and spend time with her family. She hopes to go to college, work somewhere in the medical field or work with children. By taking this journalism class she hopes to improve her writing skills and learn how to design pages.
Alondra Alvarado
Alondra Alvarado is an junior at Media academy. She is involved in journalism class, soccer, and has a job baby sitting. Some things she likes to do for fun are hang with friends, shopping, dancing, going outside, and attending amusement parks such as Six Flags and Great America. She isn’t sure on what college she would like to attend when she graduates but doesn’t want to be far from home. The career she hopes to pursue should be with children. She wants to improve her writing and people skills from this class, she also loves children and hopes to have a big family.
Diego Garcia, Co-News Editor
Diego Garcia, a junior at Media Academy and, is part of many after school programs, including the debate team and Youth Law Academy. Garcia enjoys playing video games and being on the social networking website Face book. Garcia wants to attend The University of California, Berkeley. He would love to study Political Science. Garcia wants to better handwriting and to become a better journalist.
Yuliana Mujica
Yuliana Mujica is a junior at Media Academy and first year member of the Green & Gold. In her spare time Mujica loves to listen to music and to go shopping. She hopes to pass this class with at least an A or B. Mujica hopes to go to college and someday become a doctor or work for the CSI. When asked why she chose those careers she said, “I want to get good money.”
Kim Mejia-Cuellar, Editor In Chief
Kim Mejia-Cuellar is a senior at Media Academy and Editor-In-Chief of the Green & Gold. She is a varsity policy debater and enjoys learning about politics, government and current events in debate. Mejia-Cuellar also volunteers at a writing nonprofit 826 Valencia in San Francisco, tutoring children and organizing fundraisers. Mejia-Cuellar is a published fiction and news writer. Her work has appeared in the Oaktown Teen Times, the Green & Gold, theGreenNews.net and 826 Quarterly. “Journalism is such an amazing and broad subject,” Mejia-Cuellar said. “I love it when people tell me that they learned something new from reading my work.” For fun, she reads Star Wars novels and gives back to the community through volunteering. Mejia-Cuellar hopes to make the newspaper more exciting and engaging with students at Fremont Federation. “Although the newspaper is hard work, I love being a part of such a talented group,” said Mejia-Cuellar. “I am proud of the G&G staff for putting out an award-winning publication.” She would love to attend the University of California, Berkeley, but is unsure what career she wants to pursue.
Martin Ortiz
Martin Ortiz is a junior at Media Academy. Aside from being part of the Green & Gold, Ortiz likes to play soccer, play video games and hang out with his cousin Gaby Peña, a Media Academy graduate who now attends UC Merced. When asked about what he hopes to get out of the class, Ortiz said, “To pass this class and get better at my work.” Ortiz took a class in graphic design in middle school and ever since he’s considering to pursuing graphic design as his major. Ortiz would like to attend UC Santa Cruz.
Vanessa Chavarria
Vanessa Chavarria is a senior at Media Academy and first-year member of the Green & Gold. Chavarria intends to meet new people, improve her journalism skills and receive successful grades this school year. For fun, Chavarria enjoys being outdoors, hanging out with friends, going to the mall and watching movies. After high school, Chavarria plans to go to Merritt College for two years and then transfer for California State University, East Bay. Chavarria’s career aspirations range from either being a criminal investigator to being a vet or a cosmetologist.
Kentasha “Kenay” Anderson, Co-News Editor
Kentasha Anderson (otherwise known as “Kenay”) is a junior at Media Academy. Anderson has been a part of Media since her freshman year. She transferred out at the beginning of her sophomore year, but returned about two weeks before the second semester. Anderson is an honor roll student. She has the desire to go to college to become a pediatrician. The colleges she has in mind are St. Mary’s and Clark College. Anderson says she wants to learn how to be even more outgoing by being a part of the Green & Gold. “I hope I gain more responsibility skills,” said Anderson.
Jameela Rougeau, Art Director
Jameela Rougeau is a senior at Media Academy and a member of the Green & Gold. In her spare time, she enjoys drawing, dancing, and singing. Rougeau is a senior who strives to do well in school and has remained on the honor roll since the ninth grade. When she graduates she plans to attend Academy of Art Institute in San Francisco. When asked the question why she comes to school Rougeau said, “A good education. I can learn about things I don’t know,” said Rougeau.
Laura Lem, Assistant Sports Editor
Laura Lem is a junior at Media Academy. She is also a member of the Poly Club, Leadership, and PR Club. Lem likes to eat and chill with friends when she’s not working. After high school, Lem hopes to attend a four year college and become a pediatrician. The colleges she has in mind are Pacific of Hawaii, Columbia University, and UC Irvine. She’s looking forward to Ms.Shafers’ newspaper class. “I hope to gain responsibility and better writing skills,” says Lem.
Ruliver Santos, Assistant Opinion Editor
Ruliver Santos is a senior at Media Academy. Santos has been attending Media since his freshman year. He works hard and once he’s done he likes to fool around. Santos plans to attend Laney College and then transfer to a 4-year college. He’s undecided about his major but wants to graduate from college. After college Santos wants to work and buy his own house, then start his own family.
Jose Rodriguez
Jose Rodriguez is a Media Academy junior. At the moment, he does not participate in any extra-curricular activities. His favorite pass time is to use the computer and play soccer. Rodriguez still plans to find colleges that fit his need. Rodriguez’s goal for newspaper class is to get good grades.
Sherry Munguia
Sherry Munguia is a very focused and driven young lady. Munguia is 17 years old and class of 2013 at Media. Once Munguia goes to college, she plans on being an English being her major.Her lifetime goal is to become one of the best authors there ever was. She looks up to her younger brother Solomon Munguia that also attends Media. She loves to read and maintains a 3.8 GPA.
Alejandro Vasquez, Sports Editor
Alejandro Vasquez is a senior at Media Academy High School. He is planning to go to a community college and transfer to UC Berkley to study engineering and construction. Vasquez likes to do a lot of fun things like to play video games, play soccer and hang out with friends.
Arnice St. Remy, Opinion Editor
Arnice St. Remy is a Media Academy Junior. She is part of the Black Student Union and loves to play basketball. St. Remy listens to music, draws graffiti, reads, and hangs with friends for fun. St. Remy wants to attend University of Florida, Central and pursue law or mechanical engineering. She hopes to build a good relationship with her classmates this year. St. Remy also wants to become an independent student and not have to call for help from her teachers all the time.

Pearl Joy Balagot is a junior at Media Academy. She wants to attend the University of California, Berkeley or Los Angeles to pursue her dream of becoming a doctor. In addition to her being a member of the Green & Gold, she is also a member of the yearbook club after school. Outside of school, Balagot likes to spend her time on Facebook or texting.
Kemish Quintero-Rosales
Kemish Quintero-Rosales is a junior at Media Academy. This is his first year as a staff writer for the Green & Gold. In his spare time he volunteers at the library and likes to play Black Ops. Quintero-Rosales hopes to get good grades. He is unsure of what college he wants to attend, but he wants to become an engineer.
Jorray Hart
Jorray Hart is a Media Academy senior. She’s a cheerleader and a Green & Gold staff writer. In her spare time, she loves to be on Facebook, text, and talk on phone with friends. Hart wants to study to be a physical therapist and attend California State University, Los Angeles.
Aleanna Santos, Features Editor
Aleanna Santos is a Media Academy senior. She plays volleyball and intends to join the Poly Club again this year. What Santos likes to do for fun is go swimming, watch movies, chill, dance, and listen to music. Santos is undecided on what college she wants to attend, but plans to go to a UC. Santos is also undecided on what career she wants to pursue, but is planning to explore different classes to figure out what career she’d like best. Santos hopes to get better at journalism and have a good high school experience.
Jafeth Santos
Jafeth Santos is a senior at Media Academy. He likes to play video games and soccer in his spare time. Santos plans to eventually go to either Merritt College, Cal State East Bay or San Francisco State University. A fun fact about Santos is that he is left handed.

Katelyn Bauzon is a Media Academy junior first-year in the staff for the Green & Gold. Bauzon is part of the Poly Club. In her spare time Bauzon likes to eat, blog, and hang out with friends. Bauzon is trying to go to either the University of California, Irvine or University of California, Riverside. Bauzon plans to be an anesthesiologist.
Devonyei Frazier
Devonyei Frazier is a senior at Media Academy. Frazier is a member of the Polynesian club and Yearbook Club. She wants to join the Fremont softball team. Frazier likes to talk on the phone, read, and go to the movies for fun. Frazier plans to attend Chabot Community College for two years and tranfer Columbia University in New York for two years as well. She would like to become a registered nurse, mainly to helping others, traveling, and for profit. Lastly, Frazier would like to improve people skills and better writing skills through the newspaper class.
Lisa Shafer, Adviser
Lisa Shafer is adviser to the Green & Gold newspaper. Shafer, a sixth-year teacher at Media Academy, worked as a reporter for the Contra Costa Times, Philadelphia Inquirer and The Blade (Toledo, Ohio). Shafer also worked as a copy editor at the Japan Times in Tokyo. Before coming to Media Academy, Shafer worked as a journalism adviser and English teacher at Clayton Valley High School in Concord. She holds a masters degree in journalism from the University of Michigan and a bachelors degree in English Composition from DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind. In her spare time, Shafer enjoys walking or biking around Lake Merritt, skiing in Tahoe and hanging out with friends.
